INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING A CIVIL UNION LICENSE IN LEE COUNTY, ILLINOIS

WHEN TO APPLY
Application must be made at least one day before the Civil Union is to take place. Both parties come to the office of the Lee County Clerk to apply. The license is good for 60 days after the effective date.

IMPORTANT
The Civil Union license purchased in Lee County should be used only in Lee County.

FEE
The fee for a Civil Union License is $35.00.

CEREMONY PERFORMED BY A JUDGE

If you wish to have a Civil Union performed by a Judge, you may make your own arrangement prior to the ceremony by calling during office hours:

The fee of $10.00 is collected by the Clerk of the Circuit Court of each county for each Civil Union performed by a Judge. No additional fee or gratuity will be solicited or accepted.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR NON-RESIDENTS

Non-residents CAN NOT obtain a civil union license if the said civil union would be prohibited by the laws of the jurisdiction where they reside.

RETURN OF A CIVIL UNION LICENSE

The license must be returned to the County Clerk's office by the officiant of the ceremony within 10 days after the date of the marriage.

OBTAINING A CERTIFIED COPY

A certified copy of your Civil Union license may be obtained from the County Clerk's office. Include both parties' names, the date of the Civil Union, the number of copies needed and the fee of $20.00 for the first copy and $3.00 for each additional copy.

PROHIBITED CIVIL UNIONS

 A civil union entered into prior to both parties attaining 18 years of age.

A civil union entered into prior to the dissolution of a marriage or civil union or substantially similar legal relationship of one of the parties.

A civil union between an ancestor and a descendent or between siblings whether the relationship is by the half or the whole blood or by adoption.

A civil union between an aunt or uncle and a niece or nephew, whether the relationship is by the half or the whole blood or by adoption.

A civil union between first cousins.
